Earth Day Makes Me Think (I Think I'm Hungry)

Lots of exciting stuff happening in the world of food. First, give it up for green! Earth Day notwithstanding, sustainable and responsible practices are gaining momentum at area restaurants – from compostable cups at Twisted Root Burger Co., to locally and seasonally sourced ingredients at City Hall Restaurant, to the solar powered Chipotle in Watauga. These aren’t throwaway tree-hugging trends; they’re the new ways of doing things.

But before we feel sufficiently self-righteous, we’ve got to discuss another way to get geeked about our local food scene. Guerilla restaurants seem to be the next big dining experience – über-hot chefs, unlikely (often secret) locations, impromptu engagements, madcap exchanges with fellow food snobs. It’s cloak and dagger meets My Dinner with Andre, garnished with blogosphere-scented foam. The Clandestine Dining Society. 48 Nights. SideDish Supper Club. They’re non-traditional experiences that threaten to multiply in frequency. But it needs to happen in North Tarrant, stat. We’ve got no shortage of great chefs cooking (even living) around here, and plenty of show stopping real estate to serve as the settings. Somebody make it happen. Don’t forget to invite yours truly.

Another thing that needs to happen around here: gourmet food truck. Yes, it’s a precious NY-LA trend, but oh, the possibilities. We’re an entrepreneurial bunch. Let’s brainstorm. Think global tacos. Mobile pizzeria. Premium ice cream truck. Just sayin’.
