Planting Green Roots in Roanoke

I just read a story about the sustainability movement's momentum picking up in the Los Angeles restaurant scene, which I still follow even after nearly six years living in North Texas.  Read about it here.  It's a very promising trend, but it's not isolated to large coastal cities.

Even in small communities like Roanoke, restaurants are making choices that diminish their impact on the planet.  I like what Twisted Root Burger Co. is doing.  Their take-out containers (cups and utensils included) are compostable.  That’s a pretty strong commitment to sustainability, but I really appreciate their lack of fanfare.  It’s simply part of what they stand for - the integrity of their food, and in turn, the integrity of their brand.

There’s an artisanal quality to all their food – no short cuts, made in-house, using the finest (often local) ingredients.  If it’s hurting their bottom line, it sure doesn’t show.  People are lining up for their gourmet burgers with the fixins, which can include housemade ketchup and pickles.

If you’ve ever tried their unapologetically indulgent milkshakes, you’ve probably wondered how something so ubiquitous can be so extraordinarily rich and creamy.  Here’s the spoiler: it’s churned (in-house, natch) in a frozen custard machine.  Take a sec to wrap your mind around it.  You’re drinking spooning frozen custard that’s just starting to melt!  Semi-frozen happiness. The Dallas Morning News had this to say about one of it’s “grown-up” flavors:“Adult Shakes? Oh yea. The Banana Bailey's adult shake is thick, sweet, creamy and worth every calorie!”

It makes me so proud to have Twisted Root’s help and support in our fundraising effort to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  If you’re suddenly craving one of their uncompromising milkshakes, be sure to make it out to one of their three locations on Monday, March 22nd.  Proceeds from milkshake sales will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which totally nullifies any guilt you'll feel from all those glorious calories.
